Some Factors to Consider While Buying a Hard Disk Drive

Hard disk drives have become an indispensable element of each and every computer nowadays. it holds all your data, the operating system, provides virtual memory to release burden off of the RAM and lot more

We have come a long way since the days of Floppy disks and today, HDD have the ability to store terabytes of information on them. and they are all affordable too Hard disk drives are often referred to as Data Center of PCs.
The two main varieties of HDD on the market – SATA (serial ATA) and SCSI (Small Computer system Interface)

Some factors to be considered while buying a HDD:

Form Factor:

Just like the Form Factor for motherboard, HDD form factor is important so that it fits properly into your case. Make sure you check the size of your HDD and the slot where it fits in your PC or laptops.

UDMA speed rating:

UDMA speed refers to the maximum speed of data exchange between your system memory and the hard disk drive buffer. all you have to do is to check your motherboard’s maximum data transfer speed and then find a HDD whose speed rating matches it.

Buffer:

This section of the HDD is used as a high speed memory reserve area which temporarily holds small amount of data while it is waiting to be read from or written to the drive. Generally, higher the buffer the better. 8MB should suffice.

HDD platter speeds (measured in RPM):

This is another performance related parameter. Hard disk drives nowadays run at high RPM. Common speeds of 5400 and 7200 RPM are available. Higher RPM translates to higher performance and faster data transfer. there are even 10,000 RPM HDDs available out there

Quantum LTO – 3 Backup Tape Drive

Quantum LTO-3 HH tape drive is an internal half height (HH) drive. Model number of this high speed LTO-3 drive is TC-L32AX-BR and its color is black. Quantum now offers a 3 year rapid-exchange warranty for its LTO3-HH drives. these new LTO-3 tape drives deliver outstanding performance. this drive is backward compatible. this drive is more advantageous as it has the capability to write information to all of LTO-3 tapes with high level of data accuracy. LTO-3 tape format meets your backup storage needs at an affordable price.

All of these LTO2, LTO-1 and LTO3 tapes deliver cost efficient results with the highly durable LTO-3 HH Quantum drive. these cartridges have been carefully engineered and designed for greater durability, compatibility and cost efficiency. these are more advantageous as their recording capacity and transfer speed doubles after data compression. this means that there is a 100 percent increase in the capacity and transfer rate in compressed mode.

Open nature of LTO distinguishes it from other tape technologies. LTO tape’s open nature increases its scalability and makes it more advantageous. LTO-3 HH Quantum drive offers faster transfer speed of 245 GB/hr and can store up to 400 GB un-compressed data. it is the ideal tape drive for your data center as it is enables easy integration and installation. LTO-3 drive assures increased media reliability and optimizes the output characteristics. backward compatibility of the Quantum LTO-3 HH drive secures your I.T investments.

Cleaning cartridge enhances the drive’s useful life. Highly efficient Quantum LTO-3 HH offers superior compatibility and is equally compatible with all of the following universal LTO cleaning cartridges: Maxell 183804 cleaning cartridge, HP C7978A, LTX-CL Sony, TDK D2404-CC, Quantum MR-LUCQN-01, 15931 Imation and IBM 35L2086 cleaning cartridge etc.

These LTO cleaning cartridges and LTO data tapes are developed by the most trusted and vastly experienced manufacturers of media storage products. LTO backup cartridges have longer useful life and also allow faster searching and data recording/reading.

NTT wireless module transfers data at 15 Gbps with 50cm range

The wireless transfer of data is becoming ever more important and widespread, especially in the home. We now all typically connect to the Internet through a router capable of wireless transmission. Our phones use 3G and 4G connections, and our tablets rely on a wireless connection for accessing the Internet.

No one is going to complain about fewer cables, but one issue with relying on wireless is the speed limitations of data transfers. Wi-Fi continues to get faster in the home, and 4G holds the promise of super fast connections, but with strict data limits on all the networks that defeats the point somewhat.

If you want a large amount of data transferred to a mobile device, then a wired connection is still the fastest transfer method. or at least it was. Sony’s TransferJet offered up a promising, short-range high speed wireless solution capable of up to 560Mbps. But that has now been surpassed by a new system from Japanese company Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT).

NTT has developed a prototype milliwave transceiver module capable of transferring data at up to 15Gbps, that’s 25x faster than TransferJet. The final module is promised to be small enough to fit inside a portable device like a tablet and has a range of 50 cm, meaning transfer of music and video is only going to take seconds rather than minutes.

In order to achieve the 15Gbps transfer speed, NTT utilized all four communication channels available on the 60GHz band. it is therefore capable of using one or more channels, with the slowest speed being a still impressive 3.8Gbps.

At the moment the module is quite large, measuring 12 x 6 x 6cm. But NTT says it can reduce that down to 1.2 x 1.2cm board as seen in the image below:

Before the new module can be added to a commercial device, NTT needs to figure out the wireless standards it intends to support. The company has already stated it is developing its own specification using 802.11ad as a starting point, but needs to combine that with other existing standards in order to achieve the high transfer speeds across multiple channels.

For consumers, NTT’s solution holds the promise of extremely quick data transfers in tablets initially, but could also eventually get added to smartphones. With such high transfer speeds the module is a good fit for replacing cables between your TV and media devices too.

Honest Hardware Reviews » Thermaltake Announces Tt eSports Commander MS-I Entry Level Case

Thermaltake, a leading brand in DIY computer chassis, is introducing their entry level mid-tower chassis. This new product comes with added features such as extra-long VGA support and cable-management. Users can wire their computer cables underneath the mainboard for enhanced ventilation; this chassis also holds premium VGA card, such as nVidia GTX590 and AMD Radeon HD6990, with ease. Two USB 2.0 connectors as well as HD audio microphone and earphone jacks are on the front bezel, integrating all major multimedia connectors within your hand’s reach. as an alternative and upgraded option, Thermaltake offers a USB 3.0 Super-speed version for transfer-speed seekers. This tool-free, all black Thermaltake Commander MS-I chassis offers a total of 9 drive bays for maximum storage expansion and 7 PCI expansion slots.

Inheriting the characteristics of the long line of Thermaltake chassis, special attention was paid to optimizing ventilation and airflow. Therefore, one 12 cm exhaust blue LED fan is installed in the back to warrant immediate heat dissipation. Additional airflow is driven by two ventilation holes on the right side panel and the top of the case.

The foot-stand of the Commander MS-I elevates the computer, to allow for improved ventilation at the base, where the ATX PSII power supply is located. to prevent dust from finding its way into your power supply, a removable and cleanable dust filter is positioned underneath, providing users with an easy way to keep your treasured platform spick-and-span.
