VIA APC to provide Android-based system for $49

The Raspberry Pi has brought about quite a bit of attention for miniature systems. While traditional computers cost several hundred pounds, the Raspberry Pi allows you to purchase a computer for internet browsing and, thanks to XBMC, even full HD video playback, for just £30. Intel is working on the NUC platform, which is quite a bit more expensive but also uses a faster processor. VIA has also jumped on the bandwagon and introduces the APC 8750 Android PC.

The APC uses a WonderMedia ARM11 processor which, with an 800 MHz clock frequency, is slightly faster than the Raspberry Pi. it has twice as much DDR3 memory, totaling 512 MB. VIA’s APC system has an I/O panel as found on a regular motherboard, which includes four USB 2.0 ports, audio jacks, VGA and HDMI video outputs, Ethernet connector and a micro-SD card slot, used for storage. VIA will use an older version of the Android operating system, version 2.3 “Gingerbread”, which likely runs very well on limited hardware. a drawback is that the system, sized 17 x 8.5 cm, is only capable of producing a 1280 x 720 pixel resolution, while the Raspberry Pi also supports full HD playback. this makes VIA’s APC 8750 less suited for use as a media player.

VIA’s APC is aimed at the educational segment, providing cheap computers for students, as well as hobbyists of course. in the future, faster versions of the system will be announced, possibly including dual-core and quad-core chips and integrated WiFi and Bluetooth connections. VIA’s APC 8750 has a recommended price of $49 (£32) and is powered by an external 15W power adaptor.

The storage space race – Macworld Australia

USB STICKS AND SD CARDS

Desktop drives and hefty RAIDs might be handy for Macs which don’t go anywhere, but they’re not all that practical when it comes to Mac notebooks.

The easiest way to expand the storage on your portable Mac is with a USB stick. These days you’ll pick up a 32GB model for less than $50, which should be more than enough room if you’re looking to lug around large files and perhaps backup important documents.

You’ll also find tiny USB sticks which only extend a few millimetres from your computer, such as the Lexar Echo ZE, which are perfect for leaving permanently attached to your desktop or notebook. Alternatively you’ll find SDXC card slots in the new MacBook Pros and an SD card slot on the 13in MacBook Air.

The sweet spot for SD cards is around $30 for 16GB. You’ll pay more for cards with faster read/write speeds such as the SanDisk Ultra and Extreme cards.

Unfortunately, the tiny 11in MacBook Air lacks an SD card slot, even though it’s the model which could most do with a storage boost. Thankfully, you’ll find that many USB mobile broadband sticks and Wi-Fi hotspots feature a microSD card slot, letting them double as a storage device while you’re on the road. Once again the microSD sweet spot is around $30 for 16GB.

PORTABLE DRIVES

If you need more storage in your travel bag, consider a portable hard drive.

Keep in mind you’re paying extra for portability, compared to desktop drives, as the sweet spot for portable drives is around $100 for 500GB models. You’ll also find 750GB and 1TB models. Check for connectors such as USB and FireWire depending on your needs.

Portable drives are generally smaller and lighter than desktop drives because they contain 2.5in hard drives rather than 3.5in ones. another advantage is that they’re usually powered from your Mac rather than requiring a separate power supply like most desktop drives.

The trade-off is that portable drives contain moving parts, so they’re more fragile than USB sticks and SD cards. as such, portable drives obviously don’t respond as well to drops or extreme temperature fluctuations.

NAS AND STREAMING

When it comes to home storage, a handy alternative to external drives is a central Network Attached Storage drive. a NAS is basically an external drive with an Ethernet port instead of (or as well as) a USB port. This Ethernet port makes a NAS a sensible way to consolidate your storage space while making it accessible to all the devices connected to your home network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. just like with an external drive, your files are still at your fingertips via the Finder on your Mac.

Toshiba shows off two concept tablets

Toshiba has shown off two concept tablets at its Product Preview 2012. PC Advisor has trekked out to Watford to check out Toshiba’s new kit.

Among the hordes of laptops, hard drives and other kit are two concept tablet designs which got a look at. The two devices are an unnamed 7.7-inch Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a dummy 13.3-inch monster.

Details are light on both devices at the moment but the smaller of the two is called the AT470 in the about tablet settings menu and running Android 4.0.3 ICS. we don’t know what hardware is inside but the screen uses AMOLED technology and as far as we can tell it’s the same as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7.

Both devices come with features including WiFi, microSD and HDMI. Both tablets have front and rear facing cameras of undisclosed specification.

The larger of the two devices is a huge 13.3-inch tablet primarily for multimedia use but Toshiba also said it would be useful for businesses. this larger tablet is not functioning yet but has similar technology to the 7.7-inch model and a full SD card slot.

Whether or not Toshiba brings these devices to market is unclear at the moment. In our opinion the 7.7-inch is far more likely than the 13.3-inch.
