Playing online poker for a living is absolutely doable, but it takes a combination of talent, dedication, patience, discipline and disposition to succeed.
You must study and constantly work on the weak parts of your game. Reading a book like “Texas Holdem for Advanced Players” once, will not be good enough. You will have to read it over and over, and you must truly consume, study and learn it. You must take the game seriously at all times, maintaining your focus and always continue to learn, even when you are away from the table.
Knowing where and at what times the the loosest middle and upper limit poker games are played are the number one secret for those that play professional poker online. Online poker professionals win most of their money from the weak players(fishes-suckers), so finding a table with two or three fishes on it, is extremely important if you want to succeed at this game. Tight and conservative poker tables are not profitable to play on, even for the professionals.
Finding the right table to play on will take some time and effort from your side, but will definately be worth it if you are serious of making a living playing this great and complex game.
There are some great benefits playing online poker for a living compare to live casino poker.
*No intimidation from other players.

Apple’s iPad and other tablet computers are replacing traditional note pads in some Asian schools and making the lives of thousands of students a whole lot easier.
Soon pupils could be reading on their tablets about a quaint old communication device called “paper”, especially in Asia’s advanced economies where many schools are racing towards a paperless classroom.
The slim glass slabs slip easily into a bag and can store thousands of textbooks, making a fat school bag full of heavy books, pens and notepads a thing of the past.
“I like the iPad because it is portable and we do not have to carry so many bags and files around,” said 13-year-old Nicole Ong, who now makes notes on her iPad during class at Nanyang Girls’ High School in Singapore.
A sample group of more than 120 students and 16 teachers at the school have been given iPads, at a cost of over $100,000. By 2013, every student in the school will have one.
The number of software applications — or apps — that can be used for educational purposes on tablet computers is set to explode.
It’s a brand new business that even media mogul Rupert Murdoch has identified as an area of huge potential growth.
Murdoch said his News Corp group is to push into the education technology market in a speech to the e-G8 conference of Internet entrepreneurs and European policymakers in Paris last month.
He described education as the “last holdout from the digital revolution” and outlined a vision for personalised learning with lessons delivered by the worlds best teachers to thousands of students via the Internet.
“Todays classroom looks almost exactly the same as it did in the Victorian age,” Murdoch added.
But many Asian schools are already way ahead of the game.
“No longer is language learning solely based on the teacher commenting on students’ works — classmates can feedback on one another,” said Seah Hui Yong, curriculum dean of Nanyang.
Rene Yeo, head of the information technology department at Tampines Secondary School, also in Singapore, teaches science with his iPad. His students learn factorisation by simply moving the numbers around on the screen.
They also read about animal cells and the human brain structure by clicking on the various parts. And tablet computers make the double helix structure of a human DNA practically come to life before a student’s eyes.
There are apps to learn English and maths, pupils can do cause and effect analysis on iBrainstorm, prepare for oral exams and speeches with AudioNote and even strum the guitar for a music lesson on GarageBand.
The rise of classroom technology will mirror its rise throughout society, says Sam Han, a US-based expert on the role of technology in education.
Han, instructional technology fellow at the Macaulay Honors College, City University of New York, said he expects some Asian countries to leapfrog the West.
“While the Internet was birthed in the US, Singapore and South Korea (for example) boast far greater broadband Internet access penetration and infrastructure than the US,” he said.
Japan’s communications ministry has given tablets to more than 3,000 under-12 pupils at 10 elementary schools and even fitted classrooms with interactive electronic blackboards under the so-called “future school” pilot project.
In South Korea, where schools have WiFi zones, the education ministry has been testing ‘digital textbooks’ in some schools since 2007. In 2012, the ministry says it will decide whether to supply tablets to schools nationwide.
Singapore has a hugely competitive education system known for its high level of science and mathematics instruction. The education ministry provides a grant for schools to buy this kind of equipment, as well as software and services.
Many schools already have WiFi, making it easy for students to connect to the Internet.
But some teachers acknowledged there are students who get distracted by playing games or surfing Facebook and other social media sites like Twitter.
Education psychologist Qiu Lin cautioned against schools getting carried away and promoting the blind use of technological devices, and neglecting the real goals of education.
“The trend of integrating technology into education will definitely increase,” said the assistant professor at Nanyang Technological University, which is separate from the high school.
“But after one month when the novelty of iPads wears down, a good curriculum and teaching materials that can increase deep thinking and problem solving in students need to be in place.”
Current generation of Intel “Sandy Bridge” desktop processors is going be replaced with “Ivy Bridge” in March – April 2012. the new microprocessors will be built on 22nm process, and will incorporate a number of enhancements over the Sandy Bridge, which includes better clock per clock performance, improved graphics, and random number generator. While these improvements were reported long time ago, much less was known about specifics of new CPUs, such as TDP and feature availability on different Ivy Bridge families. a few days ago, some of that information was leaked by user “bigpao007″ in ChipHell forum. the user posted 4 slides, that explain performance and power segmentation of different Ivy Bridge desktop families, and provide additional information on processor number naming convention.
Processor numbers of Ivy Bridge desktop CPUs will be similar to Sandy Bridge desktop CPUs. Core i7 family, currently represented by i7-2600 and i7-2700 series of chips, will have i7-37xx processor numbers. As you can see, the first digit “2″ in the processor number will be replaced with “3″, to signify 3rd generation Core processors. Core i5 family will also replace 2xxx numbers with 3xxx, that is i5-23xx, i5-24xx and i5-25xx will become i5-33xx, i5-34xx and i5-35xx. Similarly, Core i3 family will use i3-31xx processor numbers. Pentium and Celeron CPUs will be available with G2xxx numbers. Currently, second generation Core processors use such suffixes as “K” for unlocked processors, “S” to indicate performance-optimized mid-power chips, and “T” for low-power microprocessors. Ivy Bridge processor numbers will also use these suffixes, and will add a new one, “X” for extreme edition.
Very much alike current desktop market, different segments of 2012 desktop market will have different features. Budget Celeron processors will come with 2 cores, 2 MB of last level cache, SSE4 instructions, support for DDR3-1333 memory, and no Hyper-Threading. Pentium line will have the size of L3 cache increased to 3 MB, and support for DDR3 memory upped to 1600 MHz data rate. New features on Core i3 chips will be Hyper-Threading technology, AVX instructions, quick Sync video, Clear Video HD, and InTru 3D. According to leaked slides, Core i3-31xx CPUs will have 55 Watt Thermal Design Power. Core i5 models will “loose” Hyper-Threading, although they will add two extra cores. the processors will feature 6 MB L3 cache, Turbo Boost, Vpro technology, AES instructions, and Digital Random Number Generator. Intel will offer three different power grades for Core i5 family, 77 Watt, 65 Watt and 35 Watt. Core i7s will support Hyper-Threading, which will allow them to handle 8 threads at once. these processors will get larger 8 MB level 3 cache, and some models will come with unlocked clock multiplier. Core i7s will be offered with the same power levels as Core i5 chips.
now, five years from retirement, the single mother is reading comments from Gov. Nikki Haley and others that she might have to work longer for smaller paychecks to pay for her retirement.
Thats why may showed up Wednesday night at the Airport campus of Midlands Technical College to speak to a panel of lawmakers who are considering changes to the states retirement system.
Her message was simple: consider us.
South Carolina has five retirement systems. The largest is the S.C. Retirement system, which includes state agency employees, teachers and local government employees. It has close to 500,000 participants, more than 12 percent of the states population.
And it is in financial trouble. In 1999, the difference between how much money the state owed its employees and retirees in pension benefits versus how much money the state had to pay those benefits was $2 billion. Today, that gap is $17 billion, according to one estimate, and growing.
One reason is because the number of state government employees is shrinking while the number of retired workers is growing. In 1999, there were 3.17 active state employees paying into the retirement system for every retiree. Today, there are 1.7 active state employees per retiree.
Lawmakers have been meeting this summer to discuss how to fix the system, and Haley has promised to make its reform a big part of her legislative agenda when lawmakers return to Columbia in January for the 2012 session.
Nineteen people spoke during Wednesdays public hearing in Lexington County, including:
• Viola McDaniel, who said she took a $3,000-a-year pay cut to work for the state so she could drop her 401(k) where she has to decide how to invest her retirement savings and her retirement payout would be uncertain in favor of the states defined benefit plan, where a team of experts makes the investment decision for her and she would receive a set pension
• Ellen Cooper, who in the 1960s and 70s argued before school boards for higher teacher salaries and benefits. Wednesday, she said never thought she would spend her retirement appearing before subcommittees asking for you to let us have the retirement we were promised.
• Vivian Baxter, a state Department of Health and Environmental Control worker, who said she has seen my purchasing power plummet after increases in state workers health insurance costs and now fears she will have to make higher contributions into the state retirement system.
Lawmakers have not offered any specific plans on how to change that system, but some ideas on the table include:
• Increasing eligibility for full retirement to 30 years of service from 28 years
• Only giving cost-of-living increases to retirees who are 55 and older
• Increasing the amount that both state employees and their employers, the taxpayers, pay into the pension fund by 0.75 percent for each state workers annual pay
• Reducing the states assumed annual rate of return on its retirement system investments to 7.5 percent from 8 percent, a move that would eliminate automatic cost-of-living increases
Seeing faces and having an opportunity to hear people and how it affects them and their real life is very helpful and meaningful, Sen. Nikki Setzler, D-Lexington, said after the hearing. they bring up points you wouldnt realize otherwise.
Near the end of the hearing, Jean Westmoreland walked to the front table to speak. Westmoreland said she has been a teacher and a guidance counselor for 40 years for two reasons: she loves it, and she cant afford to retire.
She wanted lawmakers to know that.
we cannot all be capitalists and entrepreneurs, she said. Some of us like people and like to help them.
all ISS systems continue to function nominally, except those noted previously or below. Autumnal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere (Vernal Equinox in the Southern Hemisphere). Summer goodbye! FE-4 Sergei Volkov performed the routine checkup of the SM (Service Module) PSS Caution & Warning panel as part of the regular Daily Morning Inspection. CDR Fossum serviced the running BCAT-5 (Binary Colloidal Alloy Test-5) experiment, checking camera operations and changing the camera battery in the morning and before sleeptime (change required after 8 hrs). [The new experiment run is with a Harvard University phase separation sample using a different setup than for the recent crystal samples 9 & 10, mainly requiring an SSC laptop with EarthKAM timing software, power cables and camera USB cable. for illumination, the Mini-MagLite and Flash batteries do not need to be changed yet, but the camera will need a freshly charged battery. after Mike started the run by mixing the sample (#4) for phase separation and taking test photos, the EarthKAM software on the SSC-13 laptop began taking pictures of Sample 4 for 13 days at different intervals throughout the run. this requires camera battery changes twice a day and image check with a battery change once per day. BCAT-5 is operating in the JPM (JEM Pressurized Module) because some time ago the crew deemed the US Lab too crowded for running it.] after yesterday’s emptying of the WSTA (Wastewater Storage Tank Assembly) into an EDV-U container to reduce TOX2 (Toxicity Class 2) risk, Mike today tackled the major IFM (Inflight Maintenance) of removing & replacing the failed FCPA (Fluids Control & Pump Assembly) in WRS (Water Recovery System) rack 2 in Node-3 (loc. D4). The work was broken out in rotating the rack down to gain access (~25 min), removing the failed FCPA and replacing it with the spare (~40 min each), and closing out the worksite (~45 min.) [The R&R required careful demating & remating of 6 electrical connectors and numerous fluid QDs (quick disconnects), plus affixing connector caps on the failed unit. Since the FCPA contains TOX2 fluid (pretreated urine, sulfuric acid H2SO4 & chromic acid CrO3), Mike had to wear proper PPE (Personnel Protective Equipment), i.e., safety goggles, dust mask and nitrile gloves.] after the FCPA R&R, the CDR worked on the WHC (Waste & Hygiene Compartment), configuring it to supply the UPA (Urine Processor Assembly) with urine for processing, instead of an EDV-U container. Ground controllers then reactivated the UPA remotely. also in Node-3, “next door” to Mike, FE-5 Furukawa meanwhile focused his attention on a major maintenance inspection (annual + quarterly + monthly) of the T2 advanced treadmill, requiring several hours on his work schedule. [The overhaul included inspections of the corner hardware witness marks to determine which hardware fasteners are backing off and to what degree and of the damaged rack composite for signs of additional wear, also wear-and-tear inspection of the upper isolators (2), springs & wire rope, the X-, Y- and Z-axis isolators (2 each), and a calibration of the T2 load cells to account for sensor drift, using the T2's A31p laptop with updated software.] Winding up the T2 treadmill maintenance, Satoshi performed an unmanned T2 Speed Characterization ACO (Activation & Checkout) test. Afterwards the resulting T2 PCMCIA memory card data were to be downlinked so engineers can begin their review. [After the data (video & audio) review, the ground was to provide a GO/NO GO call for the crew to resume nominal exercise.] Starting a new round of the monthly preventive maintenance of RS (Russian Segment) ventilation systems, Sergei Volkov cleaned “Group B” fan screens in the MRM1 “Rassvet” module after taking documentary photography. after charging its battery, Volkov installed & started the equipment of the GFI-1 “Relaksatsiya” (Relaxation) Earth Observation experiment at SM window #9 for another run, using it to observe the Earth atmosphere & surface at a specific uplinked time (6:40am-7:05am EDT). later, FE-4 dismantled the equipment again and dumped the data via the RSS1 terminal. [By means of the GFI-1 UFK "Fialka-MV-Kosmos" ultraviolet camera, SP spectrometer and SONY HVR-Z7 HD (High Definition) camcorder, the experiment observes the Earth atmosphere and surface from window #9, with spectrometer measurements controlled from Laptop 3. "Relaxation", in Physics, is the transition of an atom or molecule from a higher energy level to a lower one, emitting radiative energy in the process as equilibrium is achieved.] later, Volkov was scheduled to initiate, on Go-ahead from TsUP-Moscow, another 1-hr refresh of the ISS interior with an O2 repress from Progress M-10M/42P (#410) oxygen tankage, with the Russian Elektron O2 generator currently off. Sergei also conducted the routine daily servicing of the SOZh system (Environment Control & Life Support System, ECLSS) in the SM. [Regular daily SOZh maintenance consists, among else, of checking the ASU toilet facilities, replacement of the KTO & KBO solid waste containers, replacement of EDV-SV waste water and EDV-U urine containers and filling EDV-SV, KOV (for Elektron), EDV-ZV & EDV on RP flow regulator.] Fossum went on a search for missing CDs (Compact Disks) with ELC (EXPRESS Laptop Computer) Release 8 software not found on 9/21. Mike then worked in the Kibo JPM (JEM Pressurized Module) on ER-4 (EXPRESS Rack 4), loading Release 7.0 common software on ELC4 at loc. F5, then following it up with new SNFM (Serial Network Flow Monitor) payload software for LAN (Local Area Network) data downlinking. [Steps included configuring & loading BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), setting up the laptop for operations on ER4, allowing 2 hrs for charging the battery after setup, and then loading the SNFM payload application on the laptop.] Afterwards, Mike performed the midday camera image & battery check for the running BCAT-5 payload. later, Fossum had a fun task: checking out the new BCR/RFID (Bar Code Reader / Radio Frequency ID) system, to demonstrate its proper function for RFID finding and other features. [The WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) scanner system locates items identified to it by the item's tag number, put in by the user, and then issues laser tones indicating the proximity of the looked-for item. The quicker the tonal sequence, the closer the item. Background: A WiFi network uses radio waves, just like cell phones, televisions and radios. Communicating across a wireless network is like two-way radio communication. A computer's built-in WiFi "adapter" translates data into a radio signal and transmits it using an antenna. A wireless "router" receives the signal and decodes it. The router sends the information to the Internet using a physical wire, called an "Ethernet" connection. WiFi sometimes is also referred to as "802.11 networking", from the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) which sets standards for a range of technological protocols, using a numbering system to classify these standards. another wireless standard with a slightly different number, 802.15, is used for WPANs (Wireless Personal Area Networks). It covers a very short range and serves a technology called "Bluetooth".] at ~11:00am EDT, the three crew members jointly undertook the standard 60-min. OBT (on-board training) session for Inc-29, with procedures to refresh their proficiency in responding to a rapid depressurization emergency. an introductory tagup preceded the drill, and a joint drill debrief with ground specialists via S-band at ~1:35pm wrapped up the exercise. [Objective of the exercise is to provide proficiency training for crew response during depressurization. The training exercise is performed under the most realistic emergency conditions possible. Instructors & OBT experts at the control centers (TsUP-Moscow, MCC-Houston, COL-CC/Oberpfaffenhofen and SSIPC/Tsukuba) stood by to send commands as required and respond to crew questions. The crew moved throughout the station in order to simulate emergency response actions per procedures at specific checkpoints; they communicated & coordinated simulated actions with the control centers as if this were a real event.] Volkov collected & downloaded the periodic sensor readings of the Russian “Pille-MKS” (MKS = ISS) radiation dosimetry experiment which has 10 sensors placed at various locations in the RS (DC1, SM starboard & port cabin windows, ASU toilet facility, control panel, MRM2, MRM1,etc.) and one in Node-3, plus one, the “duty” dosimeter, in the Reader. The memory/flash card was then replaced Today’s readings were taken manually from all 11 deployed dosimeters and logged on a data sheet. Automatic mode was then reactivated and the dosimeters returned to their original locations. [The dosimeters take their readings automatically every 90 minutes.] Fossum uninstalled the 3 alignment guides from CIR (Combustion Integrated Rack) at Lab S3 to allow the PaRIS (Passive Rack Isolation System) to be activated before begin of ground-commanded CIR operations requiring a microgravity environment. Mike also filled out his weekly FFQ (Food Frequency Questionnaire) on the MEC (Medical Equipment Computer). [On the FFQs, USOS astronauts keep a personalized log of their nutritional intake over time on special MEC software. Recorded are the amounts consumed during the past week of such food items as beverages, cereals, grains, eggs, breads, snacks, sweets, fruit, beans, soup, vegetables, dairy, fish, meat, chicken, sauces & spreads, and vitamins. The FFQ is performed once a week to estimate nutrient intake from the previous week and to give recommendations to ground specialists that help maintain optimal crew health. Weekly estimation has been verified to be reliable enough that nutrients do not need to be tracked daily.] Before “Presleep” period tonight, the CDR routes the running MPC (Multi Protocol Converter) to the ground, starting the data flow of video recorded during the day to the ground, with POIC (Payload Operations & Integration Center) routing the onboard HRDL (High-Rate Data Link). after about an hour, Mike will turn MPC routing off again. [This is a routine operation which regularly transmits HD onboard video (live or tape playback) to the ground on a daily basis before sleeptime.] Before sleeptime, Sergei will activate the RSE-LCS (Laser Communication System) A31p laptop in the SM to start recording data sent overnight per auto control protocol from the BTLS-N External Onboard Laser Communication Terminal via RS-232 line. Tomorrow morning, FE-4 will dump (copy) the data from the RSE-LCS to the RSS2 laptop for data downlink, for another test of the TEKh-39 LCS (Russian: SLS) system. at ~3:45am, the three crewmembers held the regular (nominally weekly) tagup with the Russian Flight Control Team (GOGU/Glavnaya operativnaya gruppa upravleniya), including Shift Flight Director (SRP), at TsUP-Moscow via S-band/audio, phone-patched from Houston and Moscow. at ~3:05pm, the crew is scheduled for their regular weekly tagup with the Lead Flight Director at JSC/MCC-H. Tasks listed for Sergei Volkov on the Russian discretionary “time permitting” job for today were – * Continuing the preparation & downlinking of more reportages (written text, photos, videos) for the Roskosmos website to promote Russia’s manned space program (max. file size 500 Mb), * Completing the daily IMS (Inventory Management System) maintenance, updating/editing its standard “delta file” including stowage locations, for the regular weekly automated export/import to its three databases on the ground (Houston, Moscow, Baikonur), and * Performing the daily inspection of the recently activated Russian BIO-5 Rasteniya-2 (“Plants-2″) payload with its LADA-01 greenhouse and verifying proper watering of the KM A32 & A24 root modules; [Rasteniya-2 researches growth and development of plants (currently wheat) under spaceflight conditions in the LADA greenhouse from IBMP (Institute of Bio-Medical Problems, Russian: IMBP).] The crew worked out with their regular 2-hr physical exercise protocol on the CEVIS cycle ergometer with vibration isolation (FE-5), TVIS treadmill with vibration isolation & stabilization (FE-4), and ARED advanced resistive exercise device (FE-4, FE-5). No exercise reported for CDR. CEO (Crew Earth Observation) targets uplinked for today were Dushanbe, Tajikistan (this capital city with a population nearing 750,000 is located in an agricultural area of the western part of the country at the confluence of the Varzob and Kofarnihon Rivers. Looking nadir for the city), Merapi Volcano (ISS had a pass in relatively fair weather over Indonesia’s most active volcano located in the central part of the major island of Java. As ISS approached, the crew was to look left of track for this distinctive volcanic cone. There are numerous volcanoes in this area, but Merapi is the one most likely to have a plume), Chisinau, Moldova (ISS had a pass over this target in fair weather. The Moldovan capital is located near the center of the country and inland about 120 miles from the northwestern coast of the Black Sea. at this time the crew was to look slightly left for this urban area of nearly one million inhabitants), Tehran, Iran (the Iranian capital with a population nearing 9 million is located in the northern part of the country about 70 miles south of the coast of the Caspian Sea. As ISS tracked over the desert near the Alborz Range, the crew was to look left for this sprawling urban area), San Marino, San Marino (ISS had a nadir pass over this tiny capital city of this microstate within the target area. Trying for a mapping strip to acquire useful views. The Republic itself is land-locked and is located about 20 miles southwest of the Italian coastal city of Rimini. The crew’s best visual cues were Rimini’s small but prominent bay and a light-toned river which reaches the sea at this point), Tropical Storm Ophelia, Atlantic Ocean (DYNAMIC EVENT: Tropical storm Ophelia has continued to slowly strengthen in the tropical Atlantic about 1,000 miles east of the Lesser Antilles with winds up to 55kts. however, slight weakening to 50kts is forecast by the National Hurricane Center as the system moves westward at about 12kts. at this time as ISS tracked southeastward over the Atlantic Ocean, they were to look obliquely right of track for views of the cloud structures of this tropical cyclone), Chiricahua Mountains (orbital pass over one of many “sky islands”. With elevations ranging from about 4,000 to 9,800 feet, the Chiricahua support an ecologically diverse, higher-rainfall mountain woodland within the Sonoran Desert. these scattered highlands are known as the Madrean Sky Islands and straddle the border between northwestern Mexico and the southwestern United States. CEO is seeking detailed mapping views of this target for baseline and change detection [especially after fires in this area] of unique and threatened habitat), Hurricane Hilary, Pacific Ocean (DYNAMIC EVENT: Hurricane Hilary became the eastern Pacific’s 8th named tropical cyclone this season early on 9/21 not far from the southern coast of Mexico. Since that time it has rapidly strengthened to a Category 1 storm with maximum winds of 65kts as it moved west-northwestward at 8kts paralleling the coast. at this time as ISS tracked southeastward over interior Mexico, the crew was to look obliquely right of track for this hurricane. By then Hilary is forecast remain off the coast and to be nearing Category 3 strength with winds greater than 90kts. Trying for either broad views of the storm as a whole or, if an eye is visible, trying for detailed views of its structure), and Ubinas Volcano, Peru (ISS had a near-nadir pass over Peru’s most active volcano with fair skies expected. When you start looking for some recording studio software you are usually focused on nice screen shots, fancy descriptions and price tag. however, most people never check the most important factors when selecting recording software. you should first ask yourself why do you need the software, what features are the most important for you, do you already have a computer or you would buy a new one, do you need compatibility with other studios, will this software work with your audio hardware or do you need to purchase also a new, dedicated sound card, etc. Selecting right recording software is not a simple task.
Why do you need recording software? because every home or professional recording studio uses computers for audio production. Audio computers and software are indispensable tools in every recording studio. you can use computers with appropriate software not just for recording but also for editing, adding effects, sound synthesis, filtering, mastering, archiving, transfer, etc. it is also possible to build a cheap home recording studio with ordinary PC and some popular audio recording software. Computers and audio recording software have become an essential part of every recording studio.
What features do you need? Well, this depends on the individual requirements and studio type. Every recording software supports recording, editing and playback. you should decide if you need more emphasis on audio recording features (level matching, spectrum analysis, audio compression, conversion tools, mastering, etc.) or you need more emphasis on MIDI devices, instruments and sampling (sequencers, wave table synthesis, drum machines, musical notation, etc.). many recording software solutions have good support for both, audio operations and musical instruments.
Do you already have a sound card or you don’t but can afford to buy a new one? most music recording software works with standard sound cards that are supported by the operating system, while some of them work only with proprietary audio hardware. One such example is Pro Tools which works only with special Digidesgn or M-Audio hardware. The basic rule is that you first select your audio hardware according to the needs of your studio. The next step is to find a suitable audio recording software. however, in some cases these steps can be reversed. If you know exactly what software you need or would like to have then you need to find a sound card that is supported and has the connections compatible with your recording studio equipment.
If you don’t have a computer yet, then you might have a dilemma. Mac or PC? The answer is not simple. both kinds work well and are found in recording studios. most recording studio software solutions work on both platforms but not all. If you already have a computer that you intend to use then this question is redundant. otherwise it is a good idea to check availability of chosen audio recording software on Mac and PC.
Do you need to transfer your music projects to another studio? If the answer is yes, then your software needs to be compatible with software in studios you intend to work with. a typical example of standard recording studio software which excels in compatibility is Pro Tools. All versions of Pro Tools support the Pro Tools file so you can easily transfer projects between studios that use Pro Tools. Of course, every audio software supports standard audio file formats like wav and mp3 for reading and for writing. The compatibility between different recording software is declared on the level of project files. this means that you save your unfinished project in one studio and open it in another one where it can be finished.
Price? The price of the most popular audio recording software starts at about $100. this is a very small amount comparing to the total price of your studio equipment. therefore, the price of the software should be one of the last factors when selecting software for your studio.
Selecting the right recording software can be a difficult task but you can simplify it by knowing what exactly you need and how you will use the software in your studio.
If you are fortunate in life, you learn early in age that the most important things in life are not “things.” Thousands of electronic devices, or things, barrage our daily life. Most of our devices have made our life easier and have helped us expand into frontiers we never thought possible. However, life is about balance. How can you determine if electronic devices such as the cell phone, iPod, computer, video games, etc. are dominating your life? More importantly, how influential are these devices in your child’s daily life?
Here are some questions that may help you determine if your child’s electronic devices are dominating their time and actions:
1. How many hours do your children spend on their cell phone, computer, iPod, or any other electronic device in one 24–hour period? How much time in a week? Also, factor in television.
2. Do your children isolate themselves for extended periods of time when using any of these devices? Determine if this is a privacy issue; or has it become a secrecy issue? Age may merit some privacy; but never secrecy.
3. How much reading from hardcover books or magazines does your child do, other than in school? Do not include the new “Kindle.” The Kindle, or similar devices, is an electronic-book-reader.
4. Does your child stay glued to their device with little or no outdoor activities?
5. Does your child become irritable when interrupted by visitors or family members while using a device?-At times even ignoring those that have entered the room.
You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to recognize a problem. If you have answered yes to most of these questions, then electronic devices have become too much of a dominating influence in your child’s life or maybe even yours.
We live in a technological age. Electronic devices are helpful, fun, and at times necessary. They are here to stay. What can you do to cut down on the dominating influence of electronic devices in your family and create a balance? There are balanced options and measures you can take as a parent. Be creative. Replace time spent with devices with new activities, establish a down-time for devices, and be willing to say “no” at the proper time to the use of electronics. The time to start is now. Put balance back in your family, and don’t let “things” dominate your lives.
dear Aunt TUAW,
I have an iPad2. I am traveling to Spain in November and want to NOT tote my 17″ Macbook. is there an easy way to take files (primarily older photos that I have taken) with me on a USB flash drive and using the camera connection kit USB adapter have access to these files so I can display them to my Spanish hosts?
your loving nephew,
It’s a lot easier to let your data travel by itself. consider uploading your photos to Flickr, PhotoStream or Dropbox.
the Camera Connection Kit is primarily intended to let you offload your photos from your camera to a net-connected device, so you can better use your equipment’s limited storage.
Although you can use the CCK for bringing photos along, you’d probably be far better served by copying your pictures to a net service and accessing them with your hosts’ own computers. plus, CCK components are small and easy to lose.
that aside, let Auntie remind you that forcing people to sit through long slideshows is condemned by the Geneva Conventions of Unusual Cruelty.
as a rule, you’ll want to bring the bare minimum to keep in touch on your trip, or to use for music or reading during down-time. It’s the people, and the experiences there that you’ll want to savor, not the toys that you have to lug around with you.
NEW YORK (AP) Blockbuster sales are expected for Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography of Steve Jobs when it comes out later this month, with independents and chains alike expecting it to be the biggest nonfiction release of the year.
But one seller, announced with great publicity a year and a half ago and very close to Jobs’ own story, is unlikely to have a major impact in e-book sales: Apple’s iBookstore.
Isaacson’s book, which debuts Oct. 24 from Simon & Schuster, jumped to No. 1 on Amazon and to the top 5 on Barnes & Noble.com within hours of Apple’s announcement Wednesday that Jobs had died. “Steve Jobs” also went to No. 1 on the iBookstore, but the number of sales will be comparatively small for the iBookstore. Publishers had hoped that the iPad and the Apple store would counter the power of Amazon.com, which had dominated the growing e-market through its Kindle device. But Apple’s effect on books so far has not approached its force in the music business.
Amazon’s share has been cut, less by Apple than by Barnes & Noble’s Nook, widely believed to have more than 20 percent of e-sales despite initially poor reviews. Amazon still has some 50 percent to 60 percent of the market, while Apple is generally believed to have from 10 percent to 15 percent. Publishers and analysts say the iBookstore is still relatively unknown to the general public, especially compared to all the other apps on an Apple screen. Apple was also slowed because Random House Inc., publisher of Stieg Larsson and John Grisham, did not initially sell through the iBookstore.
“A year ago, if I had to have guessed, I would have said that Apple would be where the Nook is and the Nook would be where Apple is,” says Brian Murray, CEO of HarperCollins Publishers. “They’re growing at the same rate everybody else has been growing, but that first year, with a partial catalogue, was a challenge.”
“Our surveys have shown that only 49 percent of iPad owners read e-books on them, which suggests that although the iPad is a blockbuster device, it doesn’t necessarily lead to book reading for even a majority of its owners,” says James McQuivey, an analyst at Forrester Research. “And even when it does, what we know about the success of the Kindle store and app suggests that more Kindle books are being read on iPads than iBookstore books. And why not? If you’re a book lover and are predisposed to reading e-books, you are almost guaranteed to already be an Amazon customer and you are likely to continue that Amazon relationship on your iPad.”
Apple spokesman Jason Roth declined comment.
Apple’s influence has been less on sales so far than on cost and the kinds of books that can be downloaded. The “agency” pricing model did enable publishers to start charging more than $9.99 on new and popular releases on Amazon, a shift that the online seller bitterly opposed. And the iPad helped make illustrated books more widely available in electronic format, a market Amazon hopes to reach when it begins selling its own color device, the Kindle Fire.
Maja Thomas, senior vice president for digital publishing at the Hachette Book Group, believes Apple is looking beyond the U.S.
“It’s a long-term game for them,” she says. “It’s all about the international market and all the Apple stores around the world. Apple can compete internationally with Amazon in a way that it hasn’t in the U.S. because its footprint is already so huge overseas. You could have a player in the U.S. with modest success compared to the big boys making a huge impact internationally.”
From the start, Isaacson’s book project was an almost certain success. Jobs was not only an iconic businessman, but had revealed little about his private life and was offering full cooperation and access to family and colleagues. He had battled cancer for years and was aware his book would stand as a last testament. And Isaacson is a proven best-seller as a biographer, with popular books on Benjamin Franklin and Albert Einstein.
The book was announced this spring, although Isaacson had been working on it for a couple of years. In an essay published this week on Time.com, Isaacson wrote that he was first approached by Jobs in 2004, when Isaacson was starting his Einstein book. Isaacson said he was initially surprised Jobs suggested the project, assuming he wasn’t going to retire for a long time. He later realized that Jobs knew he was sick and didn’t know how long he would live.
They last met a few weeks ago, at Jobs’ home in Palo Alto, Calif. The Apple executive was in obvious pain, Isaacson recalled, but his spirit was strong as he talked about his childhood and showed the biographer some family pictures. Before leaving, Isaacson had a final question.
“Why had he been so eager, during close to 50 interviews and conversations over the course of two years, to open up so much for a book when he was usually so private?” Isaacson wrote “‘I wanted my kids to know me,’ he said. ‘I wasn’t always there for them, and I wanted them to know why and to understand what I did.’”
