Ogero DSL modem disconnecting randomly – Blog Baladi
I’ve been very pleased with the connection and speed ever since I switched from Wise to DSL few months back, but I’ve been having some weird issues that I was only able to figure out on Sunday.
When Ogero first came to install the modem, they put filters on all the phones in the house to prevent any internet disruption, mainly on handy-phones for some reason. this however did not stop the connection from going down occasionally but I always thought it was a problem with Ogero as we are used to frequent short internet outages.
However, internet was down all day on Saturday and on Sunday as well. It would go up randomly then go down few minutes later. I called the support like ten times and they would re-assure me every time that there’s no problem from their side and that my connection is working fine. They would also ask me to check the cables or unplug everything and plug them back. I tried everything and the connection was still dropping until I noticed something. Every time I placed a call with the living room’s handy phone, the internet signal on the DSL modem would go off. I thought it was a coincidence at first but then I tried it 4 times and it would disconnect over and over again.
As a result, I unplugged the phone line from this specific handy phone and the connection stopped dropping. Noting that the phone has a filter, and we barely use it, I don’t understand why it would cause a drop in the internet connection and have no clue on how to proceed to fix it. I guess I will have to call back support today.
Linksys WRT160N Router Setup and Troubleshooting Steps
Linksys WRT160N is one of the ultra range plus wireless N Broadband router.
This is one of the N series routers that Linksys has launched. This router has 3 versions. It is a cable / DSL router that means it works with cable Internet service provider and DSL Internet service provider.
Linksys has launched a new E series of routers. The E1000 is nothing but Linksys WRT160N. The only difference is that E1000 comes with a special Cisco connect software.
How to setup WRT160N router?
If you have CD that comes with the router, you can try to run the CD and setup the network. First make sure that your computer is able to access the Internet when connected directly to the modem. if you are able to go on line with the modem that means your modem is working properly. Now connect your main computer and the modem to the Linksys WRT160N. For the initial setup, you will need to connect the computer to the router also. After the initial setup you can make it wireless. if the CD does not work then you can set up manually without the CD. For this you will need to access the router setup page. The setup page is the page where you can change the settings of the network. You will find all the settings on this page. according to the Internet service provider, you can change the settings of the network.
Wireless connection and security:
You can connect 4 computers with the Ethernet cable. It has 4 Ethernet ports for the 4 wired computers. if you have more than 4 computers that you would like to connect then you can use a switch to extend the number of ports.
Ideally you can use up to 32 wireless computers in the network using Linksys WRT160N.
Before connecting to the wireless network make sure that you have all the wireless settings of the network. You will need to know the name of the network and the type of security. The type of security supported will be WEP, WPA and WPA2.
Problem connecting to the wireless network or slow Internet:
Many users of Linksys WRT160N had problems connecting to the wireless network or slow Internet access. however if you upgrade the firmware of the router, you will get better speed and connectivity.
Linksys has released new firmware. Firmware is the software of the router. all the bugs or deficiencies can be removed by the upgrade. After upgrading the firmware it is recommended that you should reset the router to the factory default settings and try to setup the router again.
Overall Linksys WRT160N is one of the good routers if you use it properly.
A Guide In Finding The Best Wireless Router That Fits Your Needs
If you are scouring the market for wireless routers, it is natural for you to ask the question what is the best wireless router out there? Unfortunately, there is no definite answer to this question because it would depend on the specifics of your needs. There are various kinds of wireless routers. What’s best for a certain user may not be as useful to another user.
Let us say for instance that you are looking for a cable wireless router. in deciding on a router to use, you have to make sure it is of the right protocol. You should also consider some factors like the speed of your internet connection and the place where the router is going to be set up. For example, if your connection is home-based, then a G or a B router protocol should be the one you are going to use. on the other hand, if your connection is office-based, then an N protocol should be preferred. And one more thing, the router should also match with the modem. if this is not the case, you will surely be encountering problems and connection issues later.
If you have a network of several computers which you wish to connect to the internet, then using a cable modem wireless router is the way to do it. a cable modem wireless router enables a computer to connect to the internet then act as a host so that other computers in the same network can get connected to the internet as well. in the simplest of terms, a cable modem wireless router connects several or multiple computers to the same network without the need for a lot of wires and cables. fast and reliable internet connection can be accessed by multiple computers using only a single modem. furthermore, if you are using a laptop, you can use it anywhere because you are not restricted by the physical location of Ethernet ports.
If you are planning to set up a computer network in your small office or in your home, it’s recommended that you make use of an 8 port router. this type of router enables you to network up to eight computers. it can also be used with nearly a thousand wireless devices. this is a very good deal if you believe that you will be expanding your network in the foreseeable future.
The wireless router price is of course among the very first things buyers look into when purchasing the hardware. if you are such a buyer, don’t be fooled by cheaper than usual routers. here is the general rule: the cheaper they get, the lower their quality becomes. Browse around the web and determine the average price for the exact piece of router you need. Use the price you come up with in comparing with other prices used by online sellers.
And one more thing, don’t forget to read several reviews about a certain wireless router before you purchase it. Reviews are a good source of information on whether a product is good or not.
Very confusing Roku problem – router or??
A few weeks ago I installed Roku on my TV and wireless network – it worked fine for a few weeks, then a few days ago stopped working. I tried to reinstall, but could not connect to my network. I have two and sometimes three laptops connected to the network, and they all still work fine. Called Roku support, and they couldn’t figure out what was wrong, I was sure it was just a defective Roku. so I went out and bought another streaming device, Netgear NeoTV. When I tried to install, it detects my home network, with a strong signal, and then even says, “connected” but then goes to “testing DNS” and after a few minutes says “DNS testing…failed.” After calls to Netgear and then again back to Roku, nobody can figure out the problem. it couldn’t be that both these new devices are defective, and if it was anything wrong with the router or modem, wouldn’t the wireless service on my laptops be affected? I’ve tried resetting the router, and Roku walked me through trying a few changes in the router settings. again – Roku worked fine, I changed nothing, then it just stopped working. and now I can’t install Roku or Netgear NeoTV, because of some DNS problem, but my overall wireless network is still working fine. I know this is a shot in the dark, but does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Why can not have Internet with an identified 3G Modem?
Sometimes users get a usb 3g modem for the USB SOHO 3G router such as H690 series 3g router. however, it cannot dialup to be online. the following instrucation and answer may help you.
1. Before buying our 3G router, we recommend our customers to check the compatible list on our website, it could help you know whether your 3G modem is compatible with our router currently.
2. before sharing the broadband with our 3G router, please make sure that when you plug the 3G modem into your PC/Laptop, you can access the Internet on the PC/Laptop directly.
After you plug your 3G modem into the E-Lins USB SOHO 3G router, please log into 192.168.1.1 with the default username and password which are both admin. now we assume that your 3G modem can be identified by the 3G router, then you can see this picture below. here we take Huawei EC169 as an example.
If you can’t have Internet via the 3G router, it may be caused by following issues.
1. No SIM or incorrect SIM
Before you connect to the 3G network, a suited SIM and 3G modem are both a necessity. please install your SIM into the 3G modem correctly.
2. PIN Verification
Some SIM need to validate the PIN number by factory default. If so, please plug the 3G modem into your PC directly, and then disable this function in the bundled 3G modem utility. here we take two models as example.
3. Mismatched parameters
When we try to connect to the 3G network, some parameters such as Dial number, APN, Username and password are required. It is very important for us to know the correct information. If you see the following red-circled sentence in the system tools -> system log page, that means you need to ask your ISP(who provide you the 3G service) for correct information of above parameters.
After you get the correct information from your ISP, please type them into the “Network->3G” page as below picture shows.
After typing in the correct information, I am successfully connected to the Internet at once.
If there are any further problems, please feel free to contact E-Lins Support.
Netgear Faq: Netgear Support Line
This router will be serving a wired DHCP 8-10 users office off a 1.5 Mb T1 line. (No DSL or Cable out in the sticks).
I want it to be as fast as possible and need it to support UPnP or NAT-PMP for use with BTMM (back to my mac) so I can essentially VPN in easily. we currently have a Netgear FR114P which is very stable but getting old and I can’t get BTMM working with it’s UPnP. I’ve herd good things about the Linksys WRT54GS and the D-Link DGL-4300 but I’m worried these will need to be reset periodically.
I want something fast, reliable with firewall that works with BTMM and can work in a small office … And world peace too.
Here are some more details. Thanks for the input.(I also need to buy a switch as well all for under $300).
The T1 service comes with the a Cisco 1841 but it is locked down to act strictly as a modem. So no DHCP etc. (Which is a little frustrating).
I think the Cisco stuff is going to be over our budget as our T1 raised our monthly from around $40 for a 6Mb DSL to the $357 T1. I also don’t know if the Cisco stuff supports UPnP since thats mostly for gaming and P2P which I need for the Mac OS X BTMM (Back To my Mac VPN / screen / file sharing).
In regards to speed I know some routers start to bog down with more connections and when SP1 Firewalls are active, etc. I just want to make sure that we can maximize and squeeze out every kb of the 1.5Mb T1 for the 5 active users who are streaming radio, emailing, IM, web surfing accessing remote servers, etc.
netgear answers:
I use the Linksys WRT54GS for all my office installations that don’t need the power of a Cisco (which you don’t). I have some that haven’t been reset for years. As far as the speed, as long as the router is faster then the internet connection, which the Linksys is, you’re limited by the T1, except for client to client file transfers.
A virus got in my computer and changed my background and now is bombarding me with fake anti-virus programs while not letting me access Task Manager or use Search sites on the internet.

I need the computer as I am always researching info, sending emails, reading news etc. When I go to my computer [and it happened today again] I find that getting online is difficult. When I mouse over the two computers together icon it indicates I am connected. yet I get a message that the web page cannot display or I need to check if I put in the address correctly etc. All I have to do is click Netscape icon or Internet Explorer icon on the desktop. When I click IE I get a diagnostic and got through the ritual of watching the line go from one computer to the next. Sometimes it says it is renewing my IP address. Why? When I go to support I can see the type of address,IP address, submask, default gateway etc. What is it renewing?.Sometimes I look at the log for fun. I do not understand everything but Windows does a good job. by the way I have Windows XP and use NetGear Ethernet Hub my only choice presently. What causes this problem?
netgear answers:
Try using a different ethernet cable, siwth ports, then check for firewall, or try another computer and connect that to your network to see if it goes online, if it does, then you have isolated the problem that its with the computer that youre currently using.. If yes drivers? OS? Format..
I currently have a Moto Cable Modem SB6120 connected to a Netgear WNDR3700 router which has 3 free ports not in use at present. In a different room (100 ft away), I have a ROKU box, Dish receiver and an internet capable BluRay DVD player. I want to add these components via wired ethernet, since wifi signal fluctuates. Lastly, I have a new US Robotics 8 port Ethernet Switch (model 7908), which I received as a gift and is still in the box. Here are my questions:Can I use the router alone to connect these devices, since it has 3 free ports? Is it necessary to add the ethernet switch, and if I do, could signal performance potentially be affected?obviously, I need an Ethernet line from PC room to TV room (approx 100 ft). since I need to connect 3 components (maybe a 4th later), would I need to install a 4 switch wall plate at both ends, running 4 ethernet cables to support the 4-jack plates? I have ZERO experience at this, so forgive me if I asked “Duhh” questions. thank you!!
netgear answers:
The least work is to use a single cable from your computer room router to the switch, then from the switch to the devices in the TV room… There is only *VERY* minimal performance loss because of the switch, and you then have 4 or 5 spare ports in the TV room and 2 spare ports in the computer room, which could all be handy later…
Yes, you *could* do it with 3 separate ethernet cables and no switch, but that’s probably a lot of work stringing a lot of cable, (Example 3 cables by 8 feet long means 24 feet of cable!) and *VERY* minimal performance gains from that method… Plus you’re potentially short a port in the TV room!
Wall plates are also extra work, (Which would be lessened by using one cable “run” between the rooms + the switch) and could also slow the data down a *microscopic* amount but would make things a bit nicer looking…
Thanks for asking… Don’t forget to select a best answer!

Dial-up Vs DSL
If you are interested in switching to DSL, you may be curious to know what DSL is all about and how it compares to dial-up. for the purpose of this comparison, we will assume that by DSL, we are talking about ADSL, the typical DSL connection available that uses a phone line to connect. Here are a few of the basics.
For starters, dial-up and DSL both connect using your land line phone line. Simply put, a dial-up modem converts the analog communication your phone line uses into digital information needed for your computer. The same thing happens on your phone company’s end. their modem converts the from digital to analog so it can travel on the phone lines. DSL, on the other hand, uses the same wires that your analog phone line used and bypasses the digital-analog-digital conversion dial-up must use.
Therefore, DSL transmits information much faster than dial-up, and works at a higher frequency (higher than can be detected by the human ear), and by doing so, it does not effect the analog communication (phone conversations, etc.) on those same lines.
The most obvious difference, other than the speed, is the price. The total monthly cost of dial-up is between 10 and 20 dollars a month with little or no additional fees including set up or equipment fees. DSL has a monthly fee somewhere between 20-100 dollars a month (based on speed desired and location), not including the price of equipment, installation, and other fees such as repair plans, technical support, or contract fees.
Most computers have a dial-up modem already installed on the computer, so there aren’t typically many equipment costs associated with dial-up. Other than a land line and a phone cord, that is the extent of the equipment and installation costs for dial-up.
Availability and transportability are two categories where dial-up exceeds DSL. Connecting to the internet with most dial-up services is available to any computer that has a land line phone. it is not confined to the home where the DSL modem is installed.
DSL is only available in very limited areas. DSL is rarely available in rural areas because they are too far from the phone company’s central office. The choices of connection speeds on DSL could cut in half based solely on your locations. Often, a few hundred feet means the difference of DSL or no DSL for suburban homes.
DSL and dial-up can be provided both by your phone company or through your phone company. while you can set up nearly any dial-up service with any analog phone service, DSL is usually only available with your phone company or a DSL company that partners with your phone company.
Many phone companies will not let any other DSL company use their phone lines, so this could even further limit or prevent you from getting DSL. if they do, further problems can occur in the process of communication during the activation period and the resolving of technical issues. even with no complications, DSL usually takes at least several days to set up.
Dial-up has a very simple set up procedure that takes about half an hour or less (unless you are mailed a setup CD, which is often not necessary). since it is so simple to set up, you can easily move the connection, set up multiple connections, and take your service with you when you travel or move. Rarely does your phone company need to be involved or even notified, other than to make sure your access number is a local call.
DSL is a fast, dedicated connection for those who require it for gaming, downloading, and streaming of videos, etc. Dial-up excels in price, availability, and simplicity for people who need to save money or don’t have many other options.
Mobile Broadband: Move Along While You Surf
Mobile broadband refers to the different kinds of high-speed wireless internet access using a portable telephone, modem, or any other device. several networking standards might be used, like 3G, GPRS, WiMAX, Flash-OFDM, LTE, IPW, EV-DO, iBurst UMTS/HSPA and a few other portable systems. however the term is commonly used for EVDO, EDGE on the GSM as well as HSPDA/HSUPA/HSPA on the UMTS/3G/Foma. in simple words, mobile broadband can be defined as high-speed Internet provided by the cellular phone carriers. By using the broadband service, one may switch online from a device which supports access to Internet and has a modem. however, the user should be with in the broadcast range of the carrier, through a cellular tower. so, in case you have cellular service, then you can have access to Internet from a bus, taxi, train, park, lobby or even beach.
Before mobile broadband services, the only mode of access to Internet outside the office or home was with the help of hotspots. even today, several bookstores coffee shops, and municipalities offer hotspots for use of general public. however, hotspots ten to have limited broadcast range, which can act as a major limitation.
As personal digital assistant and cell phones are becoming more and more popular, the demand for such services has gone up. Along with that, cellular network evolved; due to which one can now send more of data at much faster rates. Not only that the prices have also dropped, making it more affordable. in today’s times, cellular broadband services are available not just for cellular phones or PDAs, but for computers also. one only needs a cell modem.
When it comes to availing the services of a cellular broadband service, there are a few considerations that you should keep in your mind. the following are some of them:
One of the very first considerations is that of coverage. before you avail the services of a carrier, make sure that it has coverage in a wide area, especially those areas, in which you intend to use the service. If the coverage area doesn’t include that of the required area, such service would be of no use for you. Coverage area should therefore be your primary concern.
Speed is another major concern in this regard. most service providers offer different speed options at different tariff rates. Higher the speed, higher would be the tariff. Depending upon your own requirements and the type of work for which you want the service you may select a plan which offers you the kind of speed which would be suitable for you.
Price is another main consideration. before availing the services of a carrier, it would be a good idea to see to it whether you are actually getting value for your money or not.
Mobile broadband can change your life for ever. so, get a connection for yourself and enjoy the freedom.

Global IPv6 adoption slow to take off
NEWS
Global adoption of IPv6 is slow and shows few signs of accelerating soon. We look at the state of play on the ground in Australia, the UK and Asia, in a round-up from ZDNet reporters around the world.
In Australia, IPv6 adoption is almost non-existent, reports Josh Taylor.
“It’s about as bad as everywhere else on the planet, I guess, with the single exception of Romania,” Asia Pacific Network Information Centre’s chief scientist, Geoff Huston, said in an interview with ZDNet Australia.
“Despite the best efforts of [internet service] providers like Internode, which as far as we can see has [some percent] of its customers able to use v6, everyone else in Australia is nowhere near it. Fractions of a percent.”
Internode in January announced that it would enable IPv6 by default for all new Internode customers as part of the global push to get one percent of internet users on IPv6 by the middle of this year. Internode’s outgoing managing director Simon Hackett said this week that Internode had doubled the global goal, with two percent of the ISP’s customers on IPv6.

“For end customers … unless you’re a customer of Internode and you bought a new DSL modem, it’s likely that you can’t do [IPv6] in any other form other than tunnelling, and tunnelling is pretty disastrous,” Huston said.
In addition to Internode, The Internet Society of Australia president Narelle Clark called out alternate provider iiNet for its work in the area, and praised Telstra and Optus for enabling IPv6 for business customers while other service providers wait because they haven’t seen it as a high priority yet.
The issue, according to Huston, is that many businesses and consumers buy their own network equipment, as is the case in other parts of the world.
quite frankly, they don’t buy v6 enabled ones because they cost more and nobody is telling them they have to.

“Quite frankly, they don’t buy v6 enabled ones because they cost more and nobody is telling them they have to,” he said. “When it is working, why would you upgrade it?”
Clark agreed that it was difficult to see the need to change, but said it was necessary.
“We happily connected across IPv4 but we’re sitting on this comfy couch, which has grown kind of small because the family has grown, and we need to throw this old couch out and get a new one,” she said.
She was disappointed that universities and software companies had been behind in adopting IPv6, but praised the Australian Government Information Management Office, which is aiming to have all federal government agency systems IPv6-enabled by the end of 2012.
Huston said governments had an even bigger role to play; he believes that the government could regulate to prevent new DSL modems being sold that aren’t IPv6-compatible.
“There is no point in selling a v4 modem, and it is almost a hoodwink to the poor old customer. anyone who is buying equipment these days, if they don’t get v6 in their equipment, they’re wasting their money. The internet isn’t going to work in v4 for much longer,” he said.
