Navigate the Booming Computer Science Market

Nick Black garnered a master’s in computer science from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2010 and quickly received six-figure offers for leadership roles at several technology firms. Now at NVIDIA, a tech firm that develops components used in computers and mobile devices, he maintains that his position as a senior compiler engineer is exactly the type of job he expected out of grad school and that the interview process wasn’t overly complicated.

Landing a job in today’s struggling economy was relatively simple for Black, in part because he received a master’s degree from a top engineering school, but computer science students with either bachelor’s or master’s degrees are in demand now and are expected to be for the next decade. According to a U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report, there will be an estimated 1.8 million new IT jobs by 2018, a 22 percent jump from today’s market.

The industry was dealt a blow after the dot-com bubble burst in 2000 following a decade of rampant speculation among investors, but the rise of cloud computing, mobile devices, and applications is fueling more demand in the sector, academic officials and hiring consultants say.

[Learn more about the IT job market.]

“The job market is booming,” says Gopal Gupta, head of computer science at the University of Texas–Dallas, where 80 percent of 2011 computer science students already had jobs lined up before they received their diplomas. “With an increase in automation everywhere, the popularity of online social media, the increase in mobile devices, and countries where computing jobs are traditionally off-shored–particularly India–saturating their labor supply, the job prospects for young computing professionals, especially new graduates, are excellent.”

[See how social media helps and hinders job searches.]

For prospective computer science students, the downside to this employment surge is the resulting increase in applicants, which will likely create tougher admissions standards at programs nationwide. George Mason University‘s undergraduate computer science population has leaped by 39 percent from 344 students to 479. At Trinity University, officials are bracing for a potential influx of computer science students, and have already added an extra session of the introductory class.

“If there is a huge surge of students, we may have to consider making our major and the introductory classes more competitive–maybe like premed has always been,” says Paul Myers, professor of computer science at Trinity.

Similarly, at the University of Illinois, officials note that average ACT scores of admitted computer science students have jumped over the past two years. To navigate the increasingly competitive computer science admissions process, it’s integral that students focus on honing their mathematical acumen by taking advanced classes such as AP Calculus, says Daniel Gallagher, dean of admissions at the Stevens Institute of Technology.

Robert Beck, chairman of Villanova University‘s department of computing sciences, notes that taking part in tech-centric extracurriculars could help your chances as well. “Even if there aren’t computing courses in the high school–and in many places there are not–students can look for a computing club; a robotics competition; a Web design project to give themselves a little practice,” he says.

[See the job outlook for the class of 2011.]

Once students get past the admissions hurdle, their career prospects are typically bright. At Michigan Technological University, for instance, where more than 300 students major in computer science or software engineering, 93 percent of 2010 undergraduate computer science students had jobs by graduation.

Not only are students finding jobs at above-average rates, they’re among the best paid out of college, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers. Computer science majors in the class of 2011 garnered an average starting salary of $63,017, second only to chemical engineers who make $66,886, on average. At some top schools like Illinois, average starting salaries are even higher. There, the most recent class of 175 computer science graduates attained an average starting salary of $72,597.

Logitech Wireless Touchpad brings gesture controls to PCs

(Credit:Logitech)

In Microsoft’s vision of the future, you’ll only need one input device for multiple computers, but who said it has to be a mouse? Logitech launched its Wireless Touchpad today that gives PC users a chance to pinch, point, and scroll their way across the screen.

(Credit:Logitech)

Similar to the design of the Apple Magic Trackpad, the Wireless Touchpad offers 5 inches of real estate for multiple fingers to navigate by taking advantage ofWindows 7′s gesture-based controls and multitouch: one finger to move the cursor, two fingers to page scroll, three fingers for photo browsing, and four fingers for application switching.

There are also two large buttons below the scrolling area that act as the left and right mouse clicks, or you can press down on the surface of the touch pad to actuate a click instead.

Similar to the other devices in Logitech’s arsenal, the Wireless Touchpad connects to your computer using the company’s Unifying Receiver that lets you use a single plug for up to five Logitech peripherals at the same time, freeing your USB ports for other connections.

Logitech’s Wireless TouchPad is ready to preorder now for $50.

Drafting the Future with Computer Aided Design

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) May 29, 2008

For about the past decade, Versa Tables has been well known for the durable, functional computer furniture it manufactures out of its Los Angeles, California based factory and sells around the nation. Just about every university, military base, and major corporation has at least one Versa Tables computer desk or table to boast about by now and that number just keeps on growing. What many people may not realize, though, is that Versa also manufactures one of the best lines of drafting tables and computer aided design accessories on the market today.

“We've actually been making the Professional Drafting Table and Versa Art Table series since the beginning,” remarked Chris Stormer, Chief Operations Officer at Versa. “As with all of our products, though, we are constantly reworking and improving them and some of the updated accessories have recently enjoyed some much deserved praise from some notable professionals in the field of computer aided drafting. Take for instance, the Drafting Table CAD System. We installed a few hundred of these in a well known California university a few months back and the positive praise recognition since then has been unbelievable.”

But colleges and classrooms are not the only place using the Versa series of drafting and art tables. Many of the major architecture firms and even home-based users have picked up on the tables and customized add-ons due to their high degree of functionality and durability. And the two main choices, the Professional Drafting Table and Versa Art Table, have enough diversity and versatility to suit the needs of just about every possible user. Both tables are height and tilt adjustable and can be customized to include accessories ranging from a top of the line CAD system for the Professional Drafting Table, to a simple, yet functional monitor platform for the art table.

“Every table and desk we design and manufacture appeals to wide variety of users,” noted Stormer, and our drafting and art tables are certainly no exception. I had an architect from New York email me some pictures of his new office with a fully loaded Professional Drafting Table as the center piece and I was literally blown away.and I see that table in our factory every day It's just as satisfying, though, to talk to a mom in Illinois who just bought her daughter the Versa Art Table as a graduation gift so she could work on her scrapbooking hobby with all of the proper tools.”

With almost everything in the world involving computers to at least some degree these days, it's important to provide solutions that stay with, or even a step ahead of the trends. Versa Tables has seamlessly integrated the latest equipment to meet the needs of graphic designers, architects, hobbyists and artists with a standard that has been around for decades. Whether you do it for a living or just for fun on the weekends, Versa Tables most definitely has a solution that will satisfy even the most critical, demanding consumers.

What Sets Acer Computers Apart From Other Leading Brands?

For those of you who have never heard of Acer before, it is one of the leading manufacturers of computers in the world. So, what is great about Acer computers?

Well, it so happens that Acer is one of the top five computer manufacturers in the whole world right now. So, what sets it apart from other computer manufacturers? One of the key reasons is its pricing. If you compare other computer brands with Acer, you might realize that Acer computers are more reasonable in pricing in spite of their similar features and main components.

One of the main reasons is Acer laptops are very reasonable in pricing in spite of their product features and components. Acer has its main headquarters in Taiwan, Asia. It also has many manufacturing plants all over Asia. As you may know, labor costs are low in Asian countries compared to Western countries.

Apart from labor, other operational costs like electricity and water are cheap as well. Therefore, Acer saves much money in terms of labor and operational costs. In terms of raw material, it also saves some money. Nowadays, many major electronics component manufacturers for computers like Intel and Seagate have set up their main manufacturing plants in Asia.

Therefore, Acer saves much money when it purchases these electronic components from those plants. Shipping and product prices are much cheaper in Asia. By buying in bulk, Acer cuts down its expenditure as well. Considering all these factors, it is not surprising that Acer can afford to sell its products at a good price without comprising on quality or the main functions of its computers.

Hence, it is not surprising that Acer can sell its goods at reasonable prices without compromising on quality and latest technology. If you want to save your money further, simply purchase your Acer computer directly from Acer through its company website. Apart from being cheaper than buying from computer retail shops, you can register with Acer for its international product warranty and receiving information on its time-to-time promotions.

Simply check out its website. On and off, you will note that Acer has special promotions and discounts for those who buy its computers online. Even without these promotions, Acer computers are cheaper when you buy directly from Acer instead of from computer retail shops.

However, Acer is more concerned in meeting the needs of its customers in terms of quality, warranty and functionality. You do not have worry about the possibility of your Acer computer breaking down or having other repair problems. As long as you do not drop your laptop or netbook, it should be working fine within its warranty period and beyond.

Major Component of a Computer System – Devices

In this article I attempt to give a very high level overview of computers, devices and accessories and how they interact with each other. This information is for people who are starting with computers and want to learn the basics. It’s important that you understand these high level concepts before moving on to more in-depth tutorials.

Computer

The computer can be thought of as the brain. All the other devices that plug into the computer are inputs and outputs – they either input some data, output some data, or both. The computer is independent of these devices and can run by itself. For example, the computer doesn’t need a monitor to run – the monitor is just there for the human operator to see what is going on.

Terminology: Sometimes people incorrectly refer to the computer as a hard drive, processor or CPU. The hard drive and processor/CPU are some of many internal components of a computer, but not the computer itself.

Monitor

The monitor can be thought of as a dumb drawing board, all it does is display what the computer tells it to display.

Terminology: Sometimes people incorrectly refer to the monitor as a computer. The monitor can be referred to as a monitor or a display, but shouldn’t be confused with the computer.

Keyboard and Mouse

The keyboard and mouse are input devices that send commands to the computer. Basically, we use them to tell the computer what to do.

Others

There are countless other devices, components, and accessories that plug into the computer: microphones, speakers, cameras, printers, external hard drives, etc. Most of these devices can be thought of as inputs, outputs, or both. For example, a printer can print(output) and scan(input) data.

Terminology: Devices that are not part of the primary functionality of the computer are called peripherals.

Other types of computers

Laptops, smartphones, netbooks all look different than a desktop but operate on the same basic principles. They all have a computer and some set of input/output components – a display, a keyboard etc, only in smaller devices they are more mashed together due to size constraints.

Notebook Computers – The 5 Most Popular

Notebook computers are considered one of the best innovations of the past century. The fact that you can get a computer that can go along with you everywhere was not even thinkable some decades ago. And, ever since a tremendous advancement has taken place that no one can even deny. Nowadays, notebook computers have become affordable; many students can rely on them to have their assignments done everywhere. The most popular notebook computers that you are advised to have are:

1 – Dell Studio: Dell has been so very successful in the past decade in building a reputation of strong, fast and reliable computers. The Dell studio has a very trendy look, a very effective battery time and it comes for a very affordable price.

2 – Macbook Pro: Apple gave to the world the Macbook family, this is a computer that can be virus free. Help you get with iTunes library. It works the best with your iPhone, iPad or iPod. And it has one of the fastest processors in the world.

3 – HP: Hewlett Packard is a leading company in producing tablet PCs. So this is a PC that you can use as any ordinary notebook, yet you can still manage to make it work as a tablet PC, doodling and writing on the screen will never be easier.

4 – Toshiba Satellite: The trustworthy notebook is how Toshiba is marketing its Satellite. It has a very trendy look and yet it can reliably perform all your tasks for the cheapest prices ever.

5 – Lenovo Thinkpad: Remember the Thinkpad? Well, this is its offspring, the lenovo Thinkpad will give you all you need; style, speed, reliability and the simplest design for all the businessmen who need an advanced computer with preservation of the Mac touches of the past.

Computers catching up to Captcha

Tell me if this sounds familiar: you’re online, ready to buy some concert tickets or to sign up for a new email account. But before you’re allowed to proceed, you have to prove you’re a human being by deciphering a mess of distorted, squiggly letters and numbers, then typing them into a text box. This is what’s called a Captcha, or completely automated public Turing test to tell computers and humans apart.

For a while now, I’ve had a sneaking suspicion that Captchas are getting harder. Increasingly, I’m left wondering, is that an uppercase “x” or a lowercase “x”? An “o” or a zero? A “q” or an “o” with a squiggle through it? Sometimes, even though I’m 100 per cent sure I’ve typed exactly the right thing, the computer disagrees with me.

For months, I thought I was alone in this frustration. I worried that my increasing inability to pass these tests suggested that I’m not entirely human.

Then last week, I opened an email message from a colleague that read: “You know those distorted letters we have to type to pass security tests online? I notice they’re getting more and more distorted.”

According to Luis von Ahn, one of the computer scientists who coined the term “Captcha,” the tests are getting harder.

“The thing about Captchas is that many people do their own implementations,” he told me. “Over time, some of these implementations have gotten a lot harder, because the really easy ones essentially, the undistorted ones can be broken by bots.”

Traditionally, identifying squiggly, distorted letters has been difficult for computers but comparatively easy for humans. But computers are getting better and better at it, and easy Captchas aren’t as effective as they once were.

Still, von Ahn says his own implementation of Captchas, called reCaptcha, isn’t getting any harder.

“It’s still the case, as it was three or four years ago, that a person who submits a solution [to reCaptcha] is going to be correct 96 per cent of the time,” von Ahn said. “That number remains the same.”

ReCaptcha, which was acquired by Google in 2009, generates more than 100 million Captcha images a day for various websites for free. The Captcha images it provides are also used to help decipher words that can’t be identified during the process of digitizing printed material (see sidebar).

Computers are getting better at solving Captchas because devising automated ways of bypassing the test is potentially lucrative. Imagine that you’re an email spammer. Wouldn’t it be great if you could automatically sign up for hundreds or thousands of bogus email accounts? Or, imagine you’re a ticket scalper. Wouldn’t it be terrific if you could write a computer program to automatically buy all the tickets for a concert? Captchas can help keep spammers and scalpers at bay.

Because there’s a lot of money to be made, software developers are actively writing code they say can crack Captchas that, von Ahn says, sells for $10,000. Von Ahn said he has even seen ticket scalpers advertise software they say can break reCaptcha for as high as $50,000.

According to von Ahn, it’s simply a matter of time before software will rival humans at solving Captchas, but it could take decades.

In the meantime, as easier, ineffective systems are phased out, people will continue to be frustrated by some Captchas. And as frustrating as Captchas are for the average user, they can be even more frustrating for people who are visually impaired or use screen-reader software. Some Captcha implementations include an audio alternative, but accessibility will continue to be an issue.

Regardless of how they are implemented, Captchas are all built around the idea of creating a task that’s hard for computers and easy for humans. As computers get better and better at reading squiggly letters, we may be asked to prove our humanity by performing other types of tasks.

For instance, computers are still very bad at determining the contents of a photograph. It’s difficult for software to tell the difference between a photo of a cat and a photo of a dog. Microsoft Research built a Captcha system called ASIRRA (Animal Species Image Recognition for Restricting Access) based on this idea. Companies like Solve Media and NuCaptcha have put their own twists on Captchas that require users to enter words from a text or video advertisement.

If von Ahn is right and computers will eventually be able to reliably solve text-based Captchas, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Though Captcha-busting technology could be used by spammers or ticket scalpers, it could also help decipher hard-to-read parts of digitized books or identify skewed and distorted text in photographs.

So, the next time you’re confounded by a mess of squiggly, distorted letters, don’t be too hard on yourself. Maybe it’s the Captcha’s fault.

As von Ahn told me, “Sometimes, they’re really bad. Sometimes, they are so hard to read that I can’t read them myself.”

Comforting words from one of the people responsible for some of those squiggly letters.

The Best Windows Cleaner For Windows-Based Computers

Why Your Computer Gets Slower and Inefficient

The more you use your computer, it will begin to collect data that contains information on the activities that you’ve carried out while using it. It tracks all the websites you went to, any software programs you downloaded, documents that were opened and closed and a number of other activities. This then stores them in certain places on your operating system. Most notably, the Windows registry. You may need the best Windows cleaner to clean out your operating system so that it can perform at optimal speed.

What Exactly Makes Up the Best Windows Cleaner?

What a Windows cleaner is comprises a piece of software that deletes all the history of your activity while you were on your computer like Internet sites as well as things that happened off-line like temporary Internet files and cookies. But if you are suffering from unwanted pop-ups or annoying websites that you have no idea about popping up within your Internet Explorer window, then you may need a Windows cleaner that will correct the problems in your Windows registry, which is where most problems of that sort begin.

How Your Operating System Keeps Track of Everything You Do

Your operating system stores activities in places where you may not even imagine it would be, like documents you have used, start up locations, and even the Recycle bin. When you use a Windows cleaner to clear up all the unnecessary temporary files and activities that you wish not to be exposed, it scans your entire system and effectively deletes those files from it without you having to worry about them being seen by other people that will potentially use the computer at a later time. The best Windows cleaner can keep your computer running fast and prevent computer crashes and other threatening events that can occur.

Keeping Your Privacy Intact

The most important thing about it is that it will keep your privacy secure and clean your system of every trace of information which can be deemed embarrassing or personal. Everything you do on your PC is kept logged and people who use your computer may end up seeing things that you would rather wish stayed private. When all of these activities are stored on your PC and are not dealt with, they can slow down the computer’s performance of your registry. The best Windows cleaner will efficiently scan and remove all unwanted and unnecessary impediments and should restore your computers performance back to the way it was when you bought it. This is what happened to mine before I downloaded one of the best Windows cleaner programs to remedy and reorganize my system quickly without the exposure of private activities.
