The huge success of the Zapper for the NES prompted Nintendo to make a huge successor to it. And I say huge, I mean huge. For Christmas one year I got a big box containing the Super Scope, a big bazooka shaped gun that came packed with a a six pack of games to get you started with. Besides, how can you play if you don’t have the games to come with it?

The Super Scope itself wasn’t that hard to set up but was a tad difficult to get it synced correctly. You place in six AA batteries in there just like you would place in any toy. The Super Scope was known for draining battery life quickly, however, because of its lust for power. Then you would set up the sensor on the top of the TV. The middle is the most preferred spot for the best accuracy. When you first turn on the actual game you have to shoot the screen then shoot a target as close to center as possible. This is to give you the upmost accuracy in the game.

The game then takes you to a choice of six games, as the name says. The game is divided between two themes: Blastris and LazerBlazer. Blastris is the happy-go-lucky, fun and colorful theme while LazerBlazer is the serious minded, mission based theme. Each theme has three different games. We’ll start with Blastris.

The first game in Blastris is Blastris A. It can be compared with the popular game of Tetris. In this game, several shaped blocks come across the screen, just like in Tetris. But unlike Tetris, you actually get to shoot off parts of the blocks. You get five bullets to work with per block, and you have to make sure you don’t get fully stacked on the left of the screen. Filling up a vertical column of blocks makes that row disappear, and you have to fill up five of these columns to move onto the next stage. Each stage gets progressively harder as you move on, the blocks moving faster.

Next is Blastris B. This game is comparable with the popular Sega game, Columns. Basically, your objective is to get a matching row of three blocks in the same color in three ways: horizontal, vertical, and diagonally. You have three different colors to work with – blue, green, and yellow. I was surprised there was no red. You have two different blocks – a regular block and a metal block. Regular blocks can be hit and the color changed, but metal blocks are fixed with the color they are on. There are two styles of Blastris B – Type A and Type B. Type A you get some gooey blocks that you have to clear to move onto the next stage while Type B is just a freestyle that you can go on for as long as the blocks don’t get to the top of the screen.

Next is Mole Patrol. This basically works like those “whack-a” games you see at a carnival. You shoot moles coming out of holes, with the moles increasing their speed from appearance to disappearance as you move on. Also, the number of moles you have to shoot increases as you move on, and you have to shoot a certain amount of moles in order to move onto the next stage.
