Computer Technology – Is it Good Or Bad?

The 21st century has been the age of so many technological breakthroughs and advances, technologies aimed for one purpose and that is to make the lives of people better by helping them become more efficient in their work. One such technological breakthrough is computer technology.

Computer technology has grown in great proportions starting from a computer with a size that of a room to a small well-designed palm top computer. Computers nowadays have become an indispensable part of the lives of people, especially at work, at companies, businesses, schools, offices and even in homes.

It has made the world smaller, but has it made our world better? It would then lead us to ask whether computer technology is good or bad. Now let us try to look at first some of the bad effects. With the advent of computers and with the internet it has become easy to access pornographic sites, children are more exposed to explicit content; some students would lose focus on their studies as they play computer games. The number of obesity cases has increased and it has been attributed to too much computer activity that led to less physical activity among a number of people.

On the other side of the coin, computers have opened a whole new world of possibilities. It is now easier to gain information on world events; you can even find a job in the internet; you can spread advocacies to a vast number of people all over the world; and most importantly it is now easier to be connected with one another even if you are on the other side of the globe.

Computer technology, just like any other material on earth has been created with a common good in mind. Just like a knife, it has been made to cut and slice food to speed up cooking time for people but it can also be used to kill people, and you cannot ban the use of knives in order to stop killing. And so you can’t blame computers for the problems it may have caused for it is the people who use them who caused the problem. It has disadvantages and advantages that must be taken into consideration.

But the problem is not computer technology itself; the problem resides on the people who use it. Computer technology is generally good for it can bring in a lot of good if it is used properly, but can do great harm if used unwisely.

People have choices on how they make use of earth’s resources, and that choice will determine how certain materials will affect people, be it good or bad.

My Computer is Running Slow – What Can I Do Right Now?

“My computer is running slow” Many of us have experienced this madness when our computer takes forever to fire up while you are in a desperate need to check your email or visit a site. A slow PC is no fun.and even more of an issue when you work at home, which, under the current economy, many of us do.

There are a number of issues that can lead your computer’s slow performance, but, luckily, we have lots of fixes too. Here is a count down of what you can do right now to speed up your pc without having to purchase a new one.

#6. Re-formatting Your Hard Drive

Our hard drive serves to store all the files we work with and run our PCs on. Unfortunately, hard drives tend to be disorganised, especially when there are too many files for it to handle. Therefore, over time, files may get lost or it takes longer and longer for your PC to locate the exact file you require, particularly when you try to run a software or start up/shut down your computer. By re-formatting your hard drive, you help your PC to put everything back to its original places so that it does not have to hunt for files. Re-formatting can also free up some disc space, which boosts your pc’s memory and helps it to “think faster”.

#5. Scan Your Hard Disk And Repair The Reported Errors

Every time you do not shut down your pc properly, it gets damaged. If you give your PC a scan, you will get to know what the errors are so that you can take the measures to correct them.

#4. Scan for Viruses

Viruses are known to be a major cause for the slow performance or total crash down of your computer. Savvy PC users will never go online without an anti-virus program running in the back ground. If you also have one installed in your pc, you need to make sure that it is always updated so that you can rely on its accuracy of virus checking and removing.

#3. Uninstall Programs That Are No Longer Needed

Over time, you may find that many programs you have installed in your computer are rarely used and you may even forget that you have installed them. Some of the program files can be very large files that take up lots of disk space. By removing un-needed program files, you do not just free up some disk space but also boost the speed of your PC. Sometimes, you will be amazed with the improvement.

#2. Stop Programs From Starting On Windows Boot Up

Some of the software you installed will start to run every time you turn on your PC, which will obviously slow down your pc’s boosting speed. Fortunately, this is usually an option that you can turn off from the control panel of the specific software. If you have noticed any programs which start to run along with your PC, go to that program and switch off that auto-run feature.

#1. Repair your registry

Essentially, a Windows registry is the central database of your computer. Every single change you make on your computer is recorded in the registry. There is no surprise that the longer you use your computer, the higher the risk of encountering problems in the registry which result in your PC’s slow performance.

If it takes ages for your browser window to open up or it takes forever for any of your software programs to load, it is time to give your PC a scan for possible registry error. Don’t rule out such possibility because your PC is relatively new, as even the smallest error in messing with your registry can cause a complete meltdown of your computer.

Windward's Code Wars Competition Works to Erase Gender Gap in Computer Science

Boulder, Colorado (PRWEB) November 15, 2012

In an era that has seen backwards movement in the percentage of college women majoring in computer science, Windward is helping to change the direction of that trend. The sponsor of the International Collegiate Programming Championship is making a concerted push to encourage female students to take part in the annual competition that challenges teams of computer science students to become the hackathon champion.

“Computer science schools are still 80 percent plus male, and they're one of the most male-dominated majors today,” says David Thielen, CTO and founder of Windward. “A competition like Code Wars makes the field more interesting to women and helps reduce the imbalance.”

Code Wars is a contest to see which team can write the best code. Students race against the clock and one another to analyze a problem, write a solution, and test and debug it. After the 8-hour programming deadline, teams go head to head.

To further participation by women students, Windward is working with diversity representatives at the various participating colleges. Windward also is sharing the experiences of past women participants to demonstrate the benefits of taking part in the day-long event.

“We really appreciated that the competition emphasized strategy and problem solving rather than simply coding,” said Joline Morrison, a professor in the Computer Science Department at University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire, which produced the 2012 Code Wars champion. “I overheard one of our students say, 'It was a lot of fun brainstorming, strategizing and coding with my teammates theyre awesome'”

In addition, Windward is featuring the video Windward Code Wars at Harvey Mudd. Harvey Mudd entered multiple coed teams into the 2012 contest and the president of the college, Maria Klawe, is a well-known advocate of fostering more women students in technology. Her initiatives raised the percentage of women computer science majors at Harvey Mudd from 22 to 40 percent in her first six years.

Code Wars 2013 will take place Saturday, January 26. For more information on Windward's International Collegiate Programming Championship, please visit http://www.windward.net/code_war.php

Should You Use a Keylogger Program to Spy on Your Children’s Computer Usage?

Spying on your children sounds like something out of a television show. But it’s increasingly necessary. There’s just so much stuff out there that you wouldn’t want your children to see. Whether it’s the usual suspects of sex and violence or it’s just a matter of making sure they stay safe online, you need to do something.

You’ve probably already installed some kind of program to block “undesirable” sites. These work well most of the time although some of them can get a bit too zealous – the algorithms for pictures may decide that your holiday beach shot has too much bare flesh, for instance, even though it’s totally “PG”. But then again, it’s probably best to get false negatives like that than to let nastier things slip past.

But what about the things that it’s less easy for you to control? The files sent through Facebook or instant messenger services for instance? Or even just the language their friends use – the kind of words that wouldn’t be heard on daytime television.

How can you monitor and control that?

The kind of program that works best for this is a key logger. No, this isn’t a lumberjack. It keeps a note of every single key that is pressed while the computer is used. Whether it’s on a web page, Word document, instant message system or absolutely anything else. It will also make a note of all web pages visited. So if your children are managing to bypass your security, you’ll find out for sure.

Keyloggers are simple pieces of software and act in “stealth” mode so only you will know they’re running unless you choose otherwise. They’re an excellent extra layer of child protection for your computers.

Why My Computer Is Running Slow

Are you suffering from the “my computer is running slow” syndrome? Has your computer gotten to the point where you can turn it on, go have your morning coffee, get dressed and by the time you get back to it, find that windows still hasn’t booted? This is when you know that you are suffering from the “My computer is running slow” syndrome. What causes your computer to slow down? When you first get a computer, it runs at its optimal settings, but as time goes by you add things to it, and you take things away from it. For example, you put pictures, files, music, documents, and programs on it, and then you take all of those things off again. To put this simply, the computer gets a little messy. Sort of like your old high school binder, when you didn’t clean it out. What Can You Do to Speed Your Computer Up? About once a month you should run scan disk and then defragment your hard drive. This will keep your hard drive in optimal conditions and will help keep your computer running smoothly. You can find the scan disk utility and defragmenter under system tools in accessories in your programs tab. While your there you can also run disk clean up. Another reason your computer may be running slow is because it may have a virus. Just to be on the safe side run your antivirus software, but make sure that you have an updated version, or update it online before running your antivirus software. If it takes a long time to run the program, don’t worry about it, you probably have a lot of files for it to go through. Start up programs may be another reason your computer takes so long to start. These are programs that start with your system and run in the background. You should disable start up programs that you do not use. Problems in your registry may also cause your computer to run a little slow. You can get rid of this problem by downloading a registry cleaner tools program. You can find a number of these programs online and they are very simple to install and use. Make sure you have the right hardware If after doing all of these things your computer is still running slow then you may be running too many programs on the computer and you may need to add more ram memory. You can see how much memory your computer has by going to system tools and looking at system information. If you’re running anything under 256 MB, then you need to add more memory. Remember maintaining your computer, keeping it clean, running your system tools and doing a virus scan once in a while will help your computer run at optimum speed. When installing a new program, check to see what memory requirements the program requires and don’t install it, unless you have that amount of memory. This is the way you will avoid the “My computer is running slow” syndrome.

Computer School for Seniors Opens to Rave Reviews

Carrollton, TX (PRWEB) May 19, 2008

A new virtual campus designed to empower seniors by providing encouragement, learning opportunities and new worlds to explore with a computer via the Internet is now open for students to tour.

Computer School for Seniors received rave reviews its opening weekend from the media including The Dallas Morning News and Second50years.com. But its most meaningful endorsement came from its new students.

Paul Yowell of Longview, TX was proud of the fact that over coffee one Sunday morning he read about Computer School for Seniors opening its Internet campus, and by 8:30 AM he had enrolled online and was already studying a Beginners Lesson. He said, “At 82, I have become 15% computer geek”

According to a Pew Internet & American Life report, the percent of seniors 65 and older who go online has jumped 47% between 2000 and 2004. And once seniors get online, they are just as enthusiastic as younger users.

Computer School for Seniors is the brainchild of 64 year old Mimi Witcher who has been teaching and encouraging eager-to-learn seniors in the classroom for the past seven years at Richland College in Dallas, TX. Mimi says she sees the same five characteristics in almost all of her students:

1. Creativity. “You see it displayed in so many ways in the projects they tackle,” says Mimi. “Just ask them to paint a house on their computer using Microsoft Paint, and they will build an entire village.”

2. Tenacity. Mimi has seen her fair share of senior students who struggled with certain computer classes. “Did they quit? No way. They kept taking the class over and over until they nailed it,” she said.

3. Experience. She has taught retired doctors, lawyers, and even a college dean. “I had a senior student who had won three television Emmys. He brought one of them to class to everyone’s delight.” Despite their different life experiences, they have a collective attitude of “we should never stop learning,” notes Mimi.

4. A strong work ethic. Mimi says that this generation does not require a lot of “rah-rah” talk to get motivated. “They subscribe to the Nike slogan . just do it When they worked full time, they did the job that needed to be done because it needed to be done. Period.”

5. A desire to become more computer savvy. One student created a banner that was a pictorial history of her grandson’s life from birth to college graduation. Not only was her grandson impressed, but his friends were amazed that his grandmother had so much computer knowledge and expertise. “Being able to communicate with and impress the kids and grandkids is a strong motivator for learning more about the computer and the Internet.”

Sluggish PC? Windows XP Registry Repair Might Revive It

It can be a very frustrating problem: A computer that you spent quite a bit of money on is suddenly not working right. It’s either very slow, or spitting out error messages, or just flat out crashing and freezing on you. What’s Causing All The Ruckus? Unfortunately this is a common problem among Windows PC’s, including the stable Windows XP platform. Although XP is much more secure than past versions of Windows, it still has problems with the most common culprit of PC shenanigans: The Windows Registry. So How The Heck Did This Happen? The reason the Windows XP registry is prone to multiple problems is because it’s stored just like any other file on your computer. It’s not exactly more “secure” than any other file. Every time a program is installed or uninstalled, or a piece of hardware is added, removed, or upgraded, the Windows registry gets changed around. Too many changes and the registry starts to get cluttered with entries that have been left behind by incomplete uninstall processes. This is where things get ugly, and it’s a common reason why people have computer problems. How Do I Fix It? Windows XP registry repair isn’t a complicated process. You could have your computer running like the day you took it out of the box in under 15 minutes. The registry cleaner software that does the job is extremely easy to use, even if you are not computer savvy. All you need to know is how to download and run a program, then click a few buttons.

How much more memory do I need for my computer–Dell 4700c series?

I have Dell 4700c, Windows XP, 512 memory. When I open MS Word.it stalls and freezes often. I have been told that Word eats up a lot of memory. I also have NAV and that takes a lot of memory. Aside from Word freezing I have noticed other sluggishness. I want to increase to the maximum..I, 2, 3, 4 GBs? Can you put in too much memory. If so, what problems would that cause. Someone told me that my computer has 4 slots and I could put 1GB in each slot. Is that correct? Do I need to purchase Dell Certified Memory only from Dell or are they just wanting to make money? There is a limit to how much and what kind of memory you can have (I will look this up for you.) Your computer uses PC2-5300 DDRII-SDRAM. You can have up to 4 GB (only 3.5 GB will be usable, however). You won't have any problems unless you mix memory types (use 1 GB sticks together, or 512 sticks together). You can use any memory that fits the description I already gave you without any problems.
