Key The Metal Idol is one of them old OVA series I’ve always wanted to sit down and watch, but never quite got around to it. It reminds me a bit of Lain, one of my all time favorite anime, both in Key’s personality and in the general use of color. Basically, Key is a robot who’s creator has just passed away in a sudden accident. He leaves her with the final message that if she can make 30,000 friends before her battery dies or she breaks down, she can become human. Key’s hometown is a small village of less than 100 people, so taking the message to heart she heads to Tokyo to make friends.

With the story and the title you’d probably expect Key to be some fan-service robot girl that runs on pure sugar, but it’s really the exact opposite. The story is dark and bloody. Key is completely Lain-like in her quiet, unassuming appearance and nature. She’s naive to a fault from lack of experience with the world, but otherwise intelligent and kind. The story however is far from it, especially when it involves the mysterious weapons manufacturer lurking in the background. Anyway, Key makes it to Tokyo and runs into some trouble at night, but bumps into an old friend.

After arriving in Tokyo in the last episode, running into some trouble, and meeting up with an old friend, many of the lingering issues from that episode are resolved here. Also some more mysterious happenings with the weapons guys. Key seems to go in the old style of one long story, rather than episodic content, so while not a lot happens here, it’s not exactly filler either. The pace is somewhat slow, but good. This is not an anime that needs to be rushed.

A little more background on the idol singer Miho reveals some surprising secrets, and Key seems strangely drawn to her. Meeting up again with the president of Miho’s fan club from the video store, Key manages to see the concert where some very unexpected things happen. Another good, dark episode that really feels like it’s slowly building to something big.

Wow, talk about some surprises in this one. More strangeness with the red-haired Key as the shady photo guy from a few eps ago is cornered on a rooftop by the walking prototype models. When Key gets involved, things become a little strange. At this point I can’t wait to find out more of what happens, and why.

One thing I really like about Key in this story is although she has no worldly experience, she’s also intelligent, thoughtful, and quick to figure out how things really work. And the strange electronic singing resonating through the equipment is the best Lain-ish moment around.
