I was browsing around anime sites today when I came across a stunning image from Claymore of the main character, looking quite amazing in her full body armor. Female knights in form fitting armor, carrying big swords? Sign me up! I love fantasy anime, especially when they involve knights, swords, (females), and demons. There really aren’t enough of them. MADHOUSE is involved in this one, a studio with some top notch animation under their belts, and it shows.

In the first episode, a small village is having problems with a Yoma, the local version of demons. Seems these Yoma can take the form of a villager and go undetected, until one day someone turns up dead with their guts eaten. To save their village, the chief calls in the aid of a Claymore, also known as the “silver eyed witches”. They’re a small band of half-yoma, half-human female knights spoken of only in whisper, both revered and feared. In this ep we meet Raki, who’s parents were eaten, and the Claymore sent.

So far, definitely so good. Blood, demons, and a loner girl with a sword cutting a path right down the middle. The character designs really are great, you’ve just gotta love the Claymore body armor. I don’t think the story is really going to blow anyone away anytime soon, but it seems like it will be solidly entertaining regardless.

I can’t say I hate Raki yet, but the kid sure is annoying. Sniveling, objective, and weak. He’s the typical over caring female character that usually holds the main character back. Oh, and he cooks. Nothing wrong with cooking, mind you… Sanji is in fact quite awesome. But frankly, this kid makes all of us guys look bad. Maybe he’ll grow a pair before the series is over.

Clare on the other hand, I like. Few words, no problems dispatching whatever enemy comes her way. Not sure why she picked up the kid rather than leaving him in a town somewhere, but I blame the writers for that little logic error. Maybe she just wanted someone to admire her awesomeness for awhile. Being awesome when nobody is around can be a drag.
